Canada! I be in it! Advice on what to get up to?

20 hours of sitting on a goddam plane, 4 stops, 1 suitcase missing for 30 minutes and a very expensive taxi ride later: Hide your moose (meese?), I'm finally in Canada! I'M SO EXCITED! I'm staying on Bloor Street West, right above the university and so far this city is fantastic. The first thing I noticed is that it's so clean. I guess Brisbane in Australia is pretty clean too, but it's nowhere near as dense as Toronto so I'm surprised it stays as clean as it does. Also, even though the bum count in both cities is about the same they're more polite here [grin] I love how off the main street there are roads packed with trees and houses all the way up, it's like having a nice little town mixed with all the kickass of a city. I've never seen city planning like it before and it's really cool. So now that I'm in Canada: 1) Where should I go? What should I go see? The big tower thingy is just down the road and I really want to check out the restaurant, but I'd rather go have lunch with someone that sit on my own like a loser [smile]. Any advice on where to go? 2) It would be great to meet up with some Gdnetters in Toronto. Anyone interested in catching up, PM me for my mobile number and we might be able to catch up for a drink or 10 [grin]. Maybe we should have a Gdnet meetup of a few people? A few of us could go out for drinks and have a good old chat that way. Speaking of phones, do you guys call them cell phones like America or mobile phones here? 3) How the heck do I work this shower?! There is a cold cap, a hot cap and a blank silver cap in the middle. I turned the hot one on and the water came out the bath spout. I figured out if I turn the middle cap to the right the water sounds like it is going to the shower head, but then it seems to stops like the shower head is blocking it and comes out the bath spout again. Is there anything else I would normally need to do or is this shower just crap? 4) Your taxi drivers are insane. 10 kinds of insane mixed with crazy sauce. WOO! CANADA! [grin]

Hockey seems to be the rage in Canada so you could go check out a hockey game to see what it's all about :)

I think Toronto is also pretty close to one of those great lakes...you could go for a swim :)

Mmmm, I tried pulling it before and it didn't seem to move, but I was more worried about ripping the tap right off if I was wrong so maybe I just wasn't pulling it hard enough. I'll give it another shot and see how it goes.

While in downtown Toronto, check out the CN Tower and the Skydome (yes, it's now called the Rogers Centre *grumble*). The 360 restaurant in the tower aint so great, but there are a ton of nice places to dine downtown.

The Air Canada Centre is where you gotta go for sporting events, and there's also the Royal Ontario Museum (must see).

I'll post more here as I remember.

I hear that migratory birds fly *around* the great lakes. Those who attempt to fly over them get tired because there's nowhere to land and they fall in and die. I don't know if that's actually true or just an urban legend, but that's what I heard when I was in Minnesota. The lake water is fresh and *really* cold. Good walleye fishing though :)

I actually just walked past it on my way to McDonalds, it looks freakin cool! I couldn't figure out what the hell the building was at first, then I noticed the dinosaur bones through the window.

boolean, be at the Imperial Pub (it's on Dundas just east of Yonge St) Saturday evening, around 7pm.

Other things to check out:

For anime, manga, and tabletop games, there's Hairy Tarantula, on the west side of Yonge just a bit north of Dundas. It's up a flight of stairs tho, so you gotta pay attention if you're headed there.

The CNE, when it's on. Not cheap, but lots of crazy stuff going on including helicopter rides.

The Toronto Islands, good place to take a nice lady for a picnic. Girls are hot for the islands.

Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron may be fresh, but Erie and Ontario are anything but. Despite massive cleanup efforts, Erie is still too dirty for me to want to swim in, and if you ask anyone around here about cleaning up Lake Ontario, they're more liable to break out into laughter.

I'm not from Canada, but I've been there twice [smile], so, here's my advice: Once you finish up seeing the sites in Toronto, you may want to check out Niagara Falls. It's a cool site to see, especially from the Canadian side.

I used to go to the purple pig on richmond st. Had pretty good food (keep in mind this was 4 years ago, so it may not be the same).

I also used to frequent the Firkin line of pubs (the Owl & Firkin, Beaver & Firkin, Firkin this, Firkin that..) Pretty generic places as you might expect from a chain, but still had many a blurry night stumbling out one of them.

I wish I could remember the other places I used to go, but it's all a blur now.

I found that just around the corner from me is A&C Games - rare and old school video games. I'm going to head there sometime in the next few days and freak out like a school girl [grin]

It's kinda difficult. As I don't have a car anymore, I'm stuck with either walking or catching a bus. I've caught two taxis so far and after being raped on fares I'm going to try and avoid them. I guess next year once I have my budget under control I can make plans to head outside Ontario, but at this stage I'll probably just be sticking to the Toronto region (that's even if my Visa lets me leave Toronto)

A&C is awesome, too. Great place to watch old game commercials, too.

There can be a single moose in the field, or there can be a whole heard of moose in the field. It is both singular and plural at the same time.

...I'd love to go to Toronto. Maybe when my degree is done I'll get a job there.
