3D Gaussian Splatting with Fisheye Images: Field of View Analysis and Depth-Based Initialization
This study evaluates the performance of 3D Gaussian Splatting methods on fisheye imagery, particularly focusing on fields of view exceeding 180 degrees. The findings reveal that both Fisheye-GS and 3DGUT perform optimally at a 160-degree field of view, balancing image quality and scene coverage. This is crucial for developers working on applications requiring wide-angle reconstructions, as traditional methods often falter under severe distortion.
Moreover, the introduction of a depth-based alternative using UniK3D for initialization in these extreme conditions opens new avenues for graphics programming. Even without prior training on such data, UniK3D has shown it can produce geometrically accurate results, which could redefine how developers approach 3D reconstruction in complex environments.
