Big Walk's creators reflect on their six-year journey
House House says Big Walk started as a way to recreate hanging out during COVID lockdowns, but the prototype quickly became something the team wanted to chase for real. What began as a one-week internal experiment turned into a six-year project, with roughly two years spent just figuring out what kind of game it was. That’s a useful reminder that some multiplayer concepts need a lot of iteration before the core loop is even legible.
The game’s defining systems are tightly linked: first-person co-op exploration, wobbly movement, and proximity voice chat that can be muffled or cut off by distance and obstacles. House House also had to solve for different party sizes, eventually building variants for two players, three players, and four-or-more. They say they leaned heavily on playtest footage, with around 200 hours of it helping them tune those interactions.
For developers, the production lesson is less about “make it small” and more about protecting the process. House House considered Early Access, but worried that bringing in an audience too early would distort a game that depends on quiet, specific pacing and on the team’s own sense of what feels right. Panic backed the project after a one-page pitch just six months in, which is a good example of publisher trust being driven by a strong feel rather than a fully explained design.
Big Walk launches August 4, 2026 on Switch 2, PS5, PC, and Mac. The article also frames it against the current wave of co-op “friendslop” hits like Lethal Company and Peak, but House House sees Big Walk as a longer-form open-world adventure...
