Strauss Zelnick: Netflix debut is merely "one of the hors d'oeuvres" for full GTA 6 launch; pre-order numbers are "unprecedented and astonishing"

Briefing

Take-Two is positioning the upcoming Netflix gameplay premiere for Grand Theft Auto 6 as only the opening move in a broader rollout. Strauss Zelnick called it “one of the hors d’oeuvres,” with more marketing beats still to come before launch. The preview is set to air on August 27, following Take-Two’s Q1 2027 results and analyst Q&A.

Zelnick also said GTA 6 pre-orders are already “unprecedented and astonishing,” but declined to quantify them. Take-Two recently set the base game at $80, with a $100 Ultimate Edition that includes extra digital content. Even so, he stressed that no units have actually been sold yet and that pre-orders can still be canceled, so the company is not adjusting guidance.

For developers, the more interesting angle may be Zelnick’s view of platform mix and distribution. He said rising console hardware costs are “not a good thing,” but not a major headwind because the install base keeps growing, PC is taking a larger share of comparable launches, and low-latency streaming could materially expand reach within a few years. He also framed Netflix as both a marketing and distribution partner, and said Take-Two intends to keep shipping on devices that can properly represent its games and have meaningful audience scale.

On staffing, Zelnick said Take-Two is no longer planning the old boom-and-bust cycle after a major release, arguing the company is “right-sized” and in growth mode. He also defended staying public, pointing to acquisition currency and the ability to raise capital quickly when needed.
