Aseprite v1.3.18

Briefing

Aseprite 1.3.18 has landed as the latest stable release, with fixes and features rolled in from the beta line. The update is mostly about hardening day-to-day use: crashes around preferences, sprite switching, backup data, invalid save formats, and selection deletion are all addressed, alongside platform-specific fixes for macOS and Linux.

There are a few workflow improvements worth noting for artists and technical artists. Timeline tags can now be separated into groups, tile previews got an “edges” fix, the crosshair can follow UI scaling, and the power-of-two sheet size UI has been added. Aseprite also now avoids writing aseprite.ini in --batch mode, which matters for automation and build pipelines.

The Lua side got a meaningful bump too, with API version 41, a new Dialog:samerow{} helper, save/beforesave sprite events, and a couple of command-safety fixes. That should help tool builders and pipeline scripts stay cleaner while reducing edge-case crashes during undo and transaction handling.

For teams using Aseprite as part of production rather than just as a drawing app, this is the kind of release that reduces friction more than it changes capabilities. The practical upside is fewer interruptions, better file handling, and a slightly smoother path for custom tooling and batch workflows.
