TopoSurfel: Closing the Loop between Gaussian Surfels and Meshes for Surface Reconstruction
TopoSurfel is a new reconstruction pipeline that tries to close the gap between 3D Gaussian surfels and explicit meshes. The core idea is to extract a continuous proxy mesh through a non-trainable differentiable iso-surfacing step, then use that mesh to steer the surfels toward more coherent geometry.
That matters because direct surface extraction from 3DGS has been messy in practice. Existing methods often lean on multi-view consistency or local constraints, which can leave structural ambiguities unresolved and produce floaters, especially in textureless or occluded regions. TopoSurfel adds mesh-guided normal alignment and geometry-aware density control to suppress those artifacts and help surfaces stay connected.
The method also includes a spatially aware hybrid re-initialization strategy for large-scale scenes, which is aimed at making reconstruction more robust when initialization is difficult. In other words, it is not just about prettier meshes in small demos; it is trying to hold up in bigger, more complex environments where reconstruction pipelines tend to get brittle.
For game developers, the practical angle is obvious: better scene capture and cleaner geometry from splat-based pipelines could reduce cleanup time for environment art, virtual production, and scan-to-game workflows. The code is available, and the authors report competitive geometric reconstruction quality while preserving high-quality mesh-based novel view synthesis.
