Leadwerks 5.2 Launches with OpenXR Support and Enhanced VR Capabilities
Leadwerks says Game Engine 5.2 is out now, and the headline change is a new OpenXR backend for VR. That matters because it moves the engine onto Khronos Group’s royalty-free standard, giving developers a cleaner path to support a wide range of current headsets, including Steam Frame, without building around a single vendor stack.
The VR player template has been refreshed with more realistic hand and finger movement tied to controller input. Leadwerks also switches to a higher-precision physics mode automatically when a project runs in VR, using Newton Dynamics for both C++ and Lua projects. For teams building tactile interactions, that combination should help with object handling, collision, and general VR feel.
There’s also new out-of-the-box locomotion support: the right stick handles dash movement while the left stick enables teleportation, which remains the safer default for comfort-sensitive experiences. On the content side, the model editor gets improved UV unwrapping tools and new view modes, so the update isn’t only about VR runtime features.
Leadwerks is positioning 5.2 as useful for indie VR games as well as simulation work in fields like aerospace and defense. The engine is available on Steam, with a 30-day trial for teams that want to test the workflow before committing.
