Sony agrees to transfer over 400 global VR patents to Meta following December 2025 agreement
GamesIndustry.biz reports Sony has agreed to transfer 419 global VR patents to Meta under an agreement signed in December 2025, with 180 of those patents filed in the US. The rest span Japan, China, Korea, Europe, and other regions, and more than 40 patents reportedly moved between June and September this year.
The portfolio covers virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and head-mounted display systems, which makes this more than a paperwork shuffle. For developers, patent ownership can shape what hardware features get prioritized, how aggressively platforms pursue interoperability, and where future device roadmaps may converge.
Sony’s PSVR 2 launched in February 2023 at $549.99, later adding a PC adapter in 2024, but the company has also skipped CES next year for the first time since 1967. That combination points to a softer commitment to consumer VR, even as Sony says its focus remains on entertainment, IP, and creator-facing technology.
Meta, meanwhile, is still spending heavily on XR despite Reality Labs’ $19.2 billion loss in FY25. It has shifted from VR headsets toward VR glasses planned for Spring 2027 at $1,299.99, with Unity support promised from day one, while also cutting staff and closing several VR studios this year.
