"I don't see why people are scared of it" – ShipShaper developer Tomas Sala on why indies shouldn't be stressing about GTA6

Briefing

Tomas Sala is pushing ShipShaper into Early Access on September 2, after delays that moved it away from an earlier target. The timing also puts it well ahead of GTA6’s November 19 launch, but Sala says that’s not the real concern for indies making niche games.

His view is blunt: GTA6 has its own audience, and that audience is not the one buying small sailing games, puzzle games, or story-driven deckbuilders. He also points to broader buying habits, noting that most players don’t purchase new games frequently, so the core indie audience is a relatively small but repeat-purchasing group that is unlikely to be diverted by Rockstar’s release.

Sala argues that visibility is already scarce for indies, so a blockbuster launch window is not the deciding factor many fear. In his view, strong niche fit matters more than headline coverage, especially for solo developers and tiny teams that need to match scope, budget, and audience size from the start.

That philosophy fits his own track record. The Falconeer is the better-known game, but Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles has sold more units in raw sales, reinforcing his point that fame and financial success are not the same thing. For ShipShaper, he’s betting on a dedicated niche of boat enthusiasts, word of mouth, and a price-sensitive but loyal audience rather than viral reach.

“I don't see why people are scared of it.”
