More physics
I'm wrapping up the new "Entity" stuff I've been writing. I'm about to add some new artwork into the game...and create some new scenes for the city.

I've also gotta get real time reflections and some kind of glow effect (HDR maybe?) into the game in the next few days.

Here's a screenshot of my lates…

Early Trees
I'm creating a new "Entity" system that will handle physics/rendering of everything from....trees, mailboxes, tires, boxes, etc. I'm creating a little scripting system to work with it as well...now go look at the physics videos I posted in my last entry...they're aweosme [grin] I'm quite happy with…

The power of Newton....
I've been working on this all night...I finally figured out why the physics on streetside objects was crashing, and fixed it...and now I've got all kinds of physics back into the game.

I'm implementing a new "entity" system....it's coming along very nicely if I do say so :-) I'll go into detail abou…

A few tech videos + shadow map description
I've created a few videos showing the new stuff I've recently implemented into the game...check 'em out!

Texturing is off in 3 of the videos to make the lighting effects/geometry easier to see. I turned it on in the last one, just so you'd have some idea of what it looks like. And I know there are…

Shadow map progress
Shadow maps are almost done...I've still got a few issues to work out. If you want to help me fix my alpha testing issues...read this thread HERE :-)

Still on the shadow map to do list:
- Fix alpha testing...arggg

Still on the "update graphics" list:
- Environment mapping (shop windows, vehicles, s…

Early videos of the shadow maps + dynamic sky
Alrighty...it's been a few days since the last update, I was debating if I should post these or not seeing as it's still a major work in progress...but why not.

There are still a few issues:
- No alpha testing in the shadows (fences, etc.)
- No fancy sun/glare...just a billboarded quad...that will c…

Clouds
The sky is progressing well, I've got the clouds working I'll attach some screens below (of course ). I'm not doing anything too fancy, just some billboarded quads, that are animated. I use the blending information in the texture, to provide the transparency, nothing special.

Next up is the …

Graphics Engine update progress....
I'm pretty much re-writing my entire graphics engine. I'm re-doing the sky system...right now I'm just rendering the atmosphere & fog. Though in a few days I'll have dynamic billboarded clouds, and the sun/moon implemented and casting light on the scene.

The new atmosphere is basicly just a bu…

Shadow map progress
I'm going to be using 2 2048x2048 (!!) textures for all of the shadow maps in the city. One will be updated 3 times a second and will cover the entire city, assuring all parts of the city are shadowed. Another will be updated every frame and be focused around the player's view frustum, this will …

Shadow Maps!!
Alrighty...I've been coding up this test app for the last 2 days...I'm using it to help me develop the shadow map shaders for the game. Now this shader isn't for skinned meshes, I've still got to combine this shader with those shaders...ugh.

Right now I'm running through a 2048x2048 shadow map. I'…

Real time shadows, real-time reflections, etc...
I've pretty much got the hardware skinning implemented, it doesn't look like there will be any more showstoppers, though I've still got a lot to do.

I'm pretty disappointed with the lack of functional .x exporters for newer versions of 3D Studio Max 7 or 8 (I'm using the trial versions, I don't have…

Arggggg
I posted this in the DirectX forum as well...I'd really love to find a solution to this problem so I can continue on with my magnificent game lol. I've been working on this issue in one form or another for about 2 days now...and about 20 hours. I've gone through about 10-15 potential solutions, a…

Shaders!
Alright...I hope I'm not getting in over my head here :-)

As I'm implementing multiplayer into my game, I'm going to also be overhauling the graphics engine as well. Right now the game doesn't use ANY pixel/vertex shaders, it's all done completly using the fixed function pipeline *embarrassed*. Wi…

Multiplayer update....
Ah...about half way done workin' for the night figured I'd take a break and journalize the stuff I've done lately.

I've pretty much got the whole architecture implemented, everything looks really good so far, from a design standpoint. I've never written a multiplayer game before, this whole thing i…

Gang War FAQ
I spent some time today and created a "Gang War FAQ".

Click here to check it out

It answers a lot of questions about the game, and also lays out how the gameplay will go down.

Sorry, no screenshots this time!

I hope to have a nice update in the next few days with the multiplayer progress.

Update
Ah...progress on all fronts :-D

I'm really adding too much stuff in each day to list it all in the journal...but multiplayer is coming along very nicely. It looks like I've got solutions to most of the problems I will encounter implementing multiplayer into my game.

There are bascly two reasons for…

Work in progress
So after about 12 hours of continuous work, I've managed to get about half of the "lobby" window in place and mostly functional. Though I still have a TON of things to add.

Now you can play click the "Multiplayer" button from the main menu...then use the "Server Finder" (mentioned in the last journ…

Server Finder
Yes...managed to post a screenshot of my networking/multiplayer progress ;-)

This screen is the "Server Finder", you'll use it to find LAN and Internet games.

I'm going to have to write my own Master Server (thankfully RakNet has a base class I can use) that will provide the Internet matchmaking abil…

Multiplayer
I'm making a bit of a design switch regarding the game. I'm going to make it centered around multiplay.

This is a bit of an ambitious move, but it's exactly what I've always wanted, and it's how the game has been designed from the start.

The player will still be able to play against the computer/bot…

I'm working with somebody right now to resolve some animation issues I have with the models. I was looking around and I found a video of how the animations should look. This was created by the artist I contracted to create the models.

Check it out, they look pretty cool :-D

Dynamic lights
I'm starting to work on the "night" mode of the game, seeing as half of the game will be played at night. Here's what I got so far...

It's really nothing special, just standard vertex based lighting and blended geometry.

Here's a screenshot of gunshots at night...

Drive-by shootings
Alright I'm fixing a lot of little things with the game, too many to list, but it's starting to get polished up a little bit :-D

I just added the ability to shoot out of a vehicle. You actually see the window roll down, and the gangster shoots out the window, after you stop shooting for a few secon…

I just bought:

Radeon X700 Pro AGP (256 MB GDDR3 RAM)

Sound Blaster 24 bit sound card (supports up to 7.1 suround)

Creative 5.1 suround speakers

I'm very happy with all this stuff...the main benifit will be that I can now program 5.1 surround into Gang W…

More vehicles
Finally got the rest of these vehicles into the game, now I can spend some time adding new stuff into the game.

The total number of vehicles in the game is 30 now, which is on target with most GTA-type-games. Let me know what you think!

I'm also going to add parking gar…

Back to work
Ah, after a short break from the game it's time to get back to work.

They just posted the entrys for the '06 IGF on their homepage, and damn I must say some of them look awesome.

There are a few games there that have million dollar and up budgets, which just blows my mind. If I had even a 100k budge…
