Why the founder of Kongregate believes that Roblox is its successor
Jim Greer, Kongregate’s co-founder and now Roblox’s Senior Director of Game Solutions, argues Roblox is the modern successor to the old Flash portal ecosystem. His point isn’t nostalgia; it’s that Roblox is using UGC to turn players into creators, then helping those creators scale into more complex games and bigger audiences.
For developers, the practical changes matter: Roblox says 26% of verified users are over 18, that cohort is growing faster, and 18-34 DAU/hours in the US rose 50% in Q1. Roblox also raised developer revenue share in September 2024 from 30% to as much as 70% on in-game currency purchases, and launched Incubator and Jumpstart in March to provide mentorship, promotion, and space for both native and external teams. The broader goal is to keep older users from aging out by widening genre diversity and making higher-end projects easier to discover.
