We activated gaming audiences as an audience layer. Here’s what changed.
Unity has started pushing gaming audiences as an additional targeting layer inside its Audience Hub, which is powered by Optable. The pitch is straightforward: keep buying into proven game categories like sports, puzzle, and action, then stack audience signals on top to sharpen performance instead of replacing contextual buying altogether.
Across campaigns spanning multiple verticals and formats, Unity compared category-only activation against category-plus-gaming-audience setups. The biggest gains showed up in interactive ad units, where playable and end-card formats reportedly saw a 290% lift in CTR and a 193% lift in engagement versus leading third-party audiences. In a public-sector campaign using Sports and Action audiences, engagement rose 140% when layered onto relevant game categories.
Unity also says the effect improved as more campaigns adopted the approach: engagement lift moved from 140% to 169% within two weeks as live campaigns accumulated more audience layering. Brand campaigns in categories that have historically been harder to scale in gaming saw a 32% CTR lift and 25% engagement lift. The results are based on single-campaign comparisons from June 2025, so they should be treated as directional rather than universal.
For developers, this matters because ad monetization and UA increasingly depend on how inventory is packaged and sold.
