Spatula: Exploring On-Demand In-Situ Interfaces and Interaction for Attribute Control
Spatula is a proof-of-concept system for attribute control in generative motion graphics that creates context-aware UI and interactions on demand, directly inside the content being edited. Instead of forcing creators to hunt through generic panels, it analyzes the animation context and surfaces controls that match the current task.
For game teams, the interesting part is the interaction model: attribute control is treated as an explorable landscape, with four dimensions called out explicitly — discoverability, resolution, scope, and expandability. That framing maps well to the kinds of tradeoffs tools programmers and technical artists wrestle with when building editors for procedural animation, VFX, or other parameter-heavy workflows.
The system was evaluated with 12 users, who reported that it felt intuitive and convenient while still supporting detailed parameter tuning. The practical takeaway is that adaptive, in-context controls may reduce friction for iterative creative work without sacrificing precision, which is exactly the balance many in-house tools struggle to hit.
The plug-and-play design was also demonstrated beyond motion graphics, including web design and 3D modeling. That suggests the underlying idea could be useful anywhere creators need fast access to the right controls at the right time, especially in tools that blend authored content with generative or procedural systems.
