Developers said…2026 Shader Ecosystem Survey Results
Khronos released the 2026 Real-Time Shading Ecosystem Survey, based on responses from more than 400 shader developers, graphics programmers, rendering engineers, and tools creators collected between June 16 and July 10, 2026. The results paint a familiar picture for anyone shipping across multiple GPUs and platforms: shader debugging and profiling are still the biggest headache by a wide margin.
Fifty-three percent of respondents ranked debugging/profiling as a top-three issue, with an average pain score of 52 out of 100. Cross-platform shader porting is another major cost, with 64% spending at least some effort adapting shaders across APIs, tools, or platforms and nearly 10% calling it one of their largest engineering costs.
The survey also shows where the ecosystem is converging. GLSL remains the most-used shading language at 60%, followed by HLSL at 41%, SPIR-V usage at 39%, and Slang at 34%. Developers are also asking for more systems-programming-style features in shading languages, including pointers, function calls, and true addressability.
For Khronos, the encouraging part is engagement: 73% of respondents said they’d be open to future working groups or feedback sessions. The data also points to broader-than-games usage, with strong Linux adoption and notable interest from middleware, scientific visualization, industrial visualization, film/VFX, and XR teams.
“Shader debugging and profiling emerged as the single biggest pain point by a wide margin.”
