Rockstar formed a new LA-based team to develop more realistic NPCs for Grand Theft Auto 6
GamesIndustry.biz reports Rockstar has formed a new Los Angeles-based team of writers, directors, and producers to help build more realistic NPCs for Grand Theft Auto 6. Aaron Garbut said each character is being art-directed individually, with the team obsessing over room-level details like props, wall art, and even the people pictured in those spaces.
That level of hand-authored density is the real takeaway for developers: Rockstar is pushing beyond crowd scale and into authored believability. Rob Nelson described GTA 6 as an evolution of Red Dead Redemption 2’s fidelity, but applied to a modern city packed with more people, more interactions, and more environmental storytelling.
Rockstar says GTA 6 includes more than 600,000 NPC animations, up from 300,000 in RDR2 and 55,000 in GTA 5. The studio also says Vice City is twice the size of Los Santos, and the map is three times larger than RDR2’s, which helps explain why the team appears to be investing so heavily in bespoke character and scene work.
Nelson also confirmed on Kinda Funny Gamescast that GTA 6 will not use generative AI or microtransactions. For teams watching production strategy, the story is a reminder that Rockstar is still betting on authored content, animation volume, and manual curation as the path to scale rather than leaning on automation.
“Every room in the game, somebody thought about this.”
