Five Years of Solo Development – Interview with Fountains Creator John Pywell
XBox Wire details how John Pywell spent five years building Fountains, a solo-developed Metroidvania that launches today on Xbox. Pywell says the project grew from his love of Dark Souls and Hollow Knight, with a design goal of making players feel lost, curious, and rewarded for piecing the world together themselves.
For developers, the interesting part is how much of the game’s identity came from iteration rather than a huge team. Pywell worked full time while developing in his free time, learned pixel art on the fly, and gradually replaced early placeholder visuals as his skills improved. He also notes that the game is built in Godot, which he praises as a strong fit for 2D work and solo projects.
Combat and progression follow familiar Metroidvania logic: the world is open from the start, but tools and abilities gate forward movement, encouraging backtracking and mental mapping. Pywell also calls out a Hollow Knight-style resource loop where attacking enemies restores magic, and says the soundtrack from Travis Moberg was key to nailing the game’s eerie, tense tone.
There are a few practical takeaways here for solo and small teams: scope can be managed if the core loop is clear, art quality can be improved over time without restarting the whole project, and a strong audio partner can do a lot of heavy lifting for atmosphere. Pywell says the release version is the game he always wanted to make, even if a few ultra-hidden bosses had to be left on the cutting-room floor.
