Dev snapshot: Godot 4.8 dev 7

Briefing

Godot Engine says 4.8 dev 7 is the final feature drop before feature freeze, and the branch is now moving to bugfixes and regression work as it heads toward beta. That makes this a useful checkpoint for studios evaluating whether 4.8 is ready for production adoption or for teams planning migration work around the new APIs and editor behavior.

The biggest editor-facing addition is symbol renaming, a long-requested workflow upgrade that propagates renames across the project while avoiding strings and comments. The release also adds runtime CanvasItem manipulation in the game view, including move, resize, rotate, scale, pivot edits, plus undo/redo integration and better remote shortcut handling.

On the runtime side, animated decals are now supported, and PhysicsDirectSpaceState2D/3D gain non-allocating query methods that reuse typed result objects instead of returning fresh dictionaries and arrays each call. That should matter most for projects chasing GC pressure, tighter frame times, or cleaner typed GDScript code in hot paths.

UI and accessibility also get meaningful updates: TabBar and PopupMenu now have native touch support, theme audio items can trigger UI sounds, and AccessKit support lands on iOS and Android. For teams shipping on mobile or building touch-first interfaces, those changes reduce platform-specific glue and make Godot’s UI stack more consistent across devices.
