Unity Announces External Dependency Manager Package

Briefing

Unity has announced External Dependency Manager (EDM), an official Unity Package Manager package for handling native Android and iOS dependencies. The company says it is a fork of Google’s EDM4U, now brought under Unity’s stewardship so mobile teams can keep using the same XML dependency workflow while getting engine compatibility, bug fixes, and feature updates.

The timing matters: Google plans to deprecate EDM4U on October 26, 2026, so projects and SDKs that rely on it need a migration path. Unity says existing projects should be able to switch without rewriting their setup, and EDM is free for Unity 2022.3 and later. If EDM4U is already in a project, Unity will prompt which dependency manager to use, and teams can switch back if needed during transition.

For developers, the practical win is fewer dependency headaches on mobile. Unity is positioning EDM as a way to reduce the manual work of integrating Android and iOS libraries and to help resolve conflicts between multiple SDKs for ads, analytics, monetization, and push notifications. The package still reads the same XML dependency files, and Unity says SDK maintainers can adopt it through the plug-in distributor guide.

This is also a signal that Unity wants mobile dependency management to become a first-class engine feature rather than a third-party add-on. The initial release is focused on stability, but Unity says it already includes fixes around CocoaPods/Ruby integration and user experience, with more investment planned based on developer feedback.
