Why the publisher of Nintendo Life is launching a new PC gaming site
GamesIndustry.biz reports that Hookshot has launched Steam Hype, a new PC-focused outlet and the company’s fifth site, rounding out a lineup that already includes Nintendo Life, Push Square, Pure Xbox, and Time Extension. The new brand is aimed squarely at Steam, with a discovery-first pitch built around “What’s Hot? & What’s Next on Steam?”
Hookshot says the site will lean on human curation rather than broad PC coverage, highlighting interesting indie games, notable updates, and monthly and weekly recommendation lists. Valve’s hardware ecosystem is also in scope, but the editorial emphasis is on games available now rather than trailer recaps or general PC news.
The launch lands during a rough stretch for games media, with multiple outlets cutting staff or shutting down, but Hookshot says its majority-independent ownership gives it room to expand while others contract. The site has been in stealth for months, and the team is betting that a narrower focus can build a loyal audience even in a fragmented Steam landscape.
Editorial oversight sits with Hookshot co-founder and editorial director Damien McFerran, with indie writer Dominic Tarason leading coverage and Noah McFerran as junior staff writer. Steam Hype will be ad-funded, supported by IGN Entertainment’s sales team and Hookshot’s reader supporter program, and the company is targeting break-even within a year.
