Khronos at SIGGRAPH 2026: Open Standards Reach New Heights

Khronos used SIGGRAPH 2026 in Los Angeles to showcase a broad slate of work across Vulkan, glTF, WebGL/WebGPU, OpenXR, ANARI, Slang, and its Machine Learning Council. The organization packed more than 20 sessions into the week, with Developer Day, the glTF Ecosystem Forum, and multiple BOFs aimed squarely at developers building graphics, XR, and real-time content pipelines.

The headline for many teams was KHR_interactivity for glTF 2.0, which was submitted for ratification. The extension lets interactive behavior graphs live inside the asset itself, reducing the need to rebuild the same logic for every engine or runtime. Babylon.js already supports playback, Needle Tools has been working on Unity export paths, Magic Leap has a runtime ready, and Android XR support is planned through Jetpack XR SDK.

Slang also had a strong showing, with courses and BOFs focused on using the shading language for graphics, compute, and AI workloads. That matters for teams wrestling with shader complexity across platforms, especially as neural rendering and GPU inference keep blurring the line between rendering and compute. Khronos also highlighted its 2026 Shader Ecosystem Survey, where more than 400 developers pointed to shader debugging and profiling as the top pain point.

On the asset side, Gaussian splatting and volumetric media kept gaining ground, with a glTF splatting extension at release-candidate stage and a new Volumetric Media Subgroup forming.
