From Specification to Practice: Unlocking glTF’s Full Potential
Khronos’ 3D Formats Working Group has launched an Education, Insights, and Outreach (EIO) subgroup for glTF and KTX. The goal is to close the gap between what the standards can do and what teams can confidently deploy in production, especially as glTF adds newer capabilities like Gaussian splats, interactivity, streaming, and advanced texture compression.
For developers, the practical value is clearer guidance: technical blogs, tutorials, videos, webinars, and eventually possibly training/certification. The subgroup also wants feedback from developers, enterprises, content creators, and tool vendors so real-world pain points feed back into the standardization process. Its first public webinar, “Gaussian Splats: Use Cases & Next Steps for glTF Standardization,” is set for April 7, 2026 at 7:00 AM PDT, with speakers from Cesium, XGRIDS, and the Smithsonian.
“A specification, however well-designed, only goes so far.”
- what
- Khronos launched the glTF/KTX Education, Insights, and Outreach (EIO) Subgroup to improve practical deployment guidance.
- who
- The subgroup sits under the Khronos 3D Formats Working Group; webinar speakers include Cesium, XGRIDS, and the Smithsonian.
- when
- Article dated April 6, 2026; first public webinar is April 7, 2026 at 7:00 AM PDT.
- impact
- Game teams using glTF get more actionable guidance on workflows, compression, streaming, and emerging capture formats like Gaussian splats.
Better guidance and feedback loops should reduce adoption friction.
